Defining the Corruption Risks of Foreign Political Contributions

When does a contribution to a foreign political party or candidate become an FCPA violation?  The FCPA prohibits making such contributions in exchange for something of value, but on the ground, identifying a problematic contribution can be challenging, experts told the Anti-Corruption Report.  This article discusses the risks associated with making political contributions and details the government’s guidance on the topic.  In our next issue, we will outline ten specific strategies for avoiding liability when making political contributions to foreign political candidates and parties.  See also “Ten Strategies for Avoiding FCPA Violations When Making Charitable Donations” (Jul. 11, 2012).
